I have lived with pain of one form or another almost my whole adult life. Due to a genetic problem that affects my ligaments, I am very prone to injuries of my joints and have had a total knee replacement. I have learned to live with the pain, but when both my shoulders became affected, my way of living was altered. I couldn’t lift either arm any higher than just below my chest so I couldn’t even wash and dry my own hair.
Doctor after doctor told me there was nothing they could do to help me except cortisone shots or surgery; and given that I am 77, and have been through four other serious surgeries, I was not a good candidate for further surgery. They basically just told me to find ways to work with the limitations I have. This was a very helpless feeling, I couldn’t drive, my daughter had to come twice a week to help me with my hair, and even putting dishes away in the cupboards became impossible. Then a friend of mine who has had two total knee replacements told me about Mustafa at Ultimate Results who had helped him with therapy after his surgeries. I was a little reluctant because I have been to physical therapy before, and only saw a marginal return on all my hard work.
Mustafa examined me and asked a few questions. His conclusion was a complete surprise! He said that because I haven’t been as active, my shoulder muscles weren’t getting used. There wasn’t anything wrong with them, they were just extremely weak from lack of use. He started me on a program of exercises that we would do together twice a week and then I started doing them at home as well. Within a few weeks, my pain was almost gone, and within a few months, I was once again putting dishes away in the cupboard! I am so hopeful that I will soon be able to was and dry my own hair. Thank you Mustafa for helping me get my movement back!

COPD Patients Need Physical Activity.
Spanish researchers have found that physical activity, even a small amount can improve the health of patients suffering from COPD. Those who engage in exercise and activity have fewer hospitalizations and have a lower risk of dying. COPD is a group of diseases, very often caused by years of smoking that restricts the airway and makes breathing more difficult. Many patients are dependent on oxygen most of the day. This study found that even light activity like walking three days a week could help.
More Compelling Data For Lifestyle Changes Revealed: Southwest Virginia is unhealthy.
Shocking as it may sound the data points to an unquestionable fact. That was the conclusion recently shared with hospitals and healthcare providers by the Southwest Virginia Graduate Medical Education Consortium. Data they have gleaned from regional surveys are so alarming that they have proposed partnering with UVA-Wise and area health providers to from Healthy Appalachia, a new institution whose aim is to develop a strategic plan to combat unhealthy lifestyles. The new institution will also stimulate research on how to improve the health of the area citizens, suggest new products and services for healthcare providers, and urge continuous collaboration among educators, healthcare providers and public servants.
The data that brought about this effort was brow-raising to even the most senior healthcare analyst. The researchers looked at Lenowisco and Cumberland Plateau Planning Districts for the period 1999-2003. What they found was the region’s age-adjusted death rate was “24% higher than the age-adjusted death rate in Virginia as a whole.” Working adults had the highest rates with these ailments. More compelling reasons, indeed, for every measure that may be taken to create a healthier community.
30% more likely to die from heart disease
11% more likely to die from cancer
59% more likely to die from chronic lower respiratory diseases
92% more likely to die from unintentional injuries
41% more likely to die from pneumonia and influenza
43% more likely to die from diabetes, and
91% more likely to commit suicide.
Weight Training and proper Technique
Ultimate Results Trainers understand the importance of proper Weight Training Techniques.
Weight training looks easy. But for best results, proper technique is essential.
You don’t have to be a bodybuilder or professional athlete to reap the benefits of weight training. When done correctly, weight training can help you lose fat, increase your strength and muscle tone, and improve your bone density. But if done incorrectly, weight training won’t give you these benefits — and may even lead to injury.
Why is proper weight training technique so important?
You might learn weight training techniques by watching friends or others in the gym.
But sometimes what you see isn’t safe. Incorrect weight training technique can lead to sprains, strains, fractures and other painful injuries that may hamper your weight training efforts. If you’re just getting started, work with a knowledgeable Certified Personal Trainer
a physical therapist or other fitness specialist who’s familiar with proper weight training technique.
If you’ve been using weights for a while, consider scheduling time with a trainer to demonstrate your technique and identify any changes you may need to make. What are weight training do’s and don’ts?
Here are some simple do’s and don’ts to help you maximize your weight training
program — and reduce the risk of injury.
Proper training form gives you better results.
Lift an appropriate amount of weight. Start with a weight you can lift comfortably 12 to 15 times. For most people, a single set of 12 repetitions with the proper weight can build strength just as efficiently as can three sets of the same exercise. As you get stronger, gradually increase the amount of weight.
Use proper form. Learn to do each exercise correctly. The better your form, the better your results — and the less likely you are to hurt yourself. If you’re unable to maintain good form, decrease the weight or the number of repetitions. If you’re not sure whether you’re doing a particular exercise correctly, ask a personal trainer or other fitness specialist for help.
Breathe. You might be tempted to hold your breath while you’re lifting weights. Don’t. Holding your breath can lead to dangerous increases in blood pressure. Instead, breathe out as you lift the weight and breathe in as you lower the weight.
Seek balance. Work all of your major muscles — abdominals, legs, chest, back, shoulders and arms. Strengthen the opposing muscles in a balanced way, such as the front of the shoulder and the back of the shoulder.
Rest. Avoid exercising the same muscles two days in a row. You might work all of your major muscle groups at a single session two or three times a week, or plan daily sessions for specific muscle groups. For example, on Monday work your arms and shoulders, on Tuesday work your legs, and so on.
